Things I Like

My interests range far and wide, but here are a few things that have been catching my imagination lately. This by no means an exhaustive list, and you can expect to see it grow.

      WATCHES

I've really been getting into these lately. There's something about the complexity, the precision of the watchmaker's art that appeals to my geeky side. That and the artistry of design involved, where fractions of a millimetre make an astonishing distance. And the sound they make has such variance - I couldn't tell you who made a watch by the sound, but you really can hear the difference between manufacturers' movements. My favourites right now come from Breitling, although I'm starting to reassess my previous indifference to Rolexes and I've been developing a hankering to get my hands on an IWC.

      BEER

Oh yes, I like a pint. A pint of proper beer that is - the stuff with twigs in that actually tastes of something as opposed to the mass-produced rubbish that spends sod all on ingredients and the national debt of Brazil trying to convince you that it's cool. Speaking of cool, why serve it so cold you can't even taste the bloody stuff?

So yes, I like beer and I'm lucky enough to know people who make it.

      FOOD

No links here, but I'm a big foodie. I love to cook and make up recipes on the fly - one friend recently described me as "one of those proper chefs who can mess about with the recipe." but that's not strictly true, because I'd need a recipe to start from and meals frequently start around here with me spotting something in the supermarket of getting an irrational craving for one particular ingredient and designing the rest of the meal from there. It's more fun that way.

      AEROPLANES

Old ones for preference, please. I'm a regular visitor at both the Imperial War Museum at Duxford and The Shuttleworth Collection, and the latter holds what is to my mind the most beautiful aeroplane ever built: Grosvenor House.
